The history of the Internet usually begins around 1966 when the ARPANET was funded, but data networking had been around for decades before that, and for most of that time message routing had been a labor intensive manual process, but in the 1950s, a decade before the ARPANET came on line, data networking was automated, and there were no computers involved in the process, but there were motors, gears, paper tape and relays everywhere.
