For Daryl Roberts, bandleader and founder of Melbourne-based roots combo Hey Gringo, making records is all about capturing a moment rather than perfecting one. That philosophy sits at the heart of the band's ninth album, Adios Amigo, a collection of ten new originals that embraces spontaneity, chemistry and the joy of live performance.
Speaking with Australian Musician editor Greg Phillips, Roberts explained that after experimenting with building previous albums track by track, he deliberately took a different approach for Adios Amigo. Recorded at Hailstone Studios in Melbourne with engineer Paulie Bignell, the album was tracked live with guitarist Charlie Bedford and drummer Harvey Constable, with Roberts simultaneously playing keyboards and left-hand bass just as he does on stage. Most remarkably, nearly every song was completed in a single take, with many of the guide vocals proving impossible to improve upon. "I wanted it live," Roberts said. "That's how we play, and that's where the chemistry comes from."
