Welcome to the 6th Dark Sun Player knowledge video. This series is intended to give the players in a Dark Sun campaign the knowledge their characters would most likely have about the world of Athas having lived there all their lives. There will be no DM secret lore here, so you don’t have to worry about this video spoiling your fun discovering hidden arcana through adventure. Today’s video is about the City-State of Tyr.
The City-State of Tyr is located in the central west part of the tablelands. Its culture and architecture are loosely ancient Phoenician mixed with a large helping of fantasy.
In the original boxed set Tyr is ruled by the Sorcerer King Kalak. Before I go farther, I’m going to issue a spoiler alert, not long after the release of the setting boxed set things in Tyr changed a lot. If you are starting play before the events of the Freedom Module and The Verdant Passage Novel, you may want to stop here and come back later once your game has got beyond those products.
Kalak, after having ruled Tyr for nearly a score of centuries, was assassinated by a group of 3 slaves, a noble, and one of the King’s own high templars. During games dedicated to the completion of Kalak’s Ziggurat, a gladiator name Rikus through a spear at Kalak; striking him in the chest. He was drug off by his guards, and a short time later Tithian, one of his High Templars pronounced himself King. Tithian freed all of Tyr’s slaves, dissolved the old Noble Senate, and set up a legislative counsel of citizens for the city. About 10 years after the death of King Kalak, King Tithian went missing and hasn’t been heard from since.
Because of Tithian’s edict of all the city-states in the Tyr region, only in Tyr itself is slavery illegal. The city is also known for Kalak’s Ziggurat. The footprint of this enormous step pyramid takes nearly one tenth of the area inside the city’s walls. Kalak’s Ziggurat gladiatorial arena, and the King’s Palace, the Golden Tower form the heart of Tyr. The ziggurat reaches into the air with seven tiers, each with a different vibrant color, hundreds of feet high into the olive sky.
Tyr has one of the only iron mines in the tablelands, and it is by far the most productive. Wars have been fought over Tyr’s iron, and unnumbered slaves have died extracting the precious brown ore from the mountain side.
Tyr’s templars are easy to recognize in their black cossack robes. If your game takes place after the death of King Kalak, the Templars of Tyr will not have spellcasting abilities from their king. Even without spells to back them up, the templars still run the city and enforce its laws.
The nobility of Tyr, all have both villas within the city, and estates in the surrounding countryside. Most Tyrain Noble families produce a variety of goods, silk, faro flour, cactus blue ale, Cotton, and wine among them. The city, itself has collective farms and industry that produce textiles, glass, ceramics, and iron. Many of the royal products are sold to merchant houses, to export across the table lands.
All the Large merchant houses operate out of Tyr with House Vordon being headquartered there. Having a monopoly on Tyr’s Iron trade House Vordon sets the price of the highly sought after metal in the Tyr region. This has made them one of the richest of the great merchant houses.
That’s all for this one, check out our next Dark Sun Players Knowledge where we will cover the City-State of Urik. Also, you can use this QR code to get tickets to DarkCon on The Adventure Nexus. I’ll see you there.
