Welcome to the 2nd Dark Sun Player knowledge video. This new series is intended to give the players in a Dark Sun campaign the knowledge their characters would most likely have about the world of Athas having lived there all their lives. There will be no DM secret lore here, so you don’t have to worry about this video spoiling your fun discovering hidden arcana through adventure. Today’s video is about the City-State of Draj.
The City-State of Draj is located in the northwest quadrant of the Tablelands. It is completely surrounded by a large mud flat, save a narrow causeway. This acts as a moat for the city. Its culture and architecture are loosely Mesoamerican based, having Myan, Aztec, and Olmec elements mixed with a large helping of fantasy.
Draj is ruled by the Sorcerer King Tectuktitlay, or Tec for short, who proclaims himself the god of Athas’ moons Ral and Guthay. His abode is a 200-foot-tall step-pyramid that abuts Draj’s arena, the Palace of Combat. Depending on where in the Dark Sun timeline your game takes place, and how closely your DM follows its metaplot, Tectuktitlay may not reign over Draj.
King Tec’s Templars are called moon priests because of their fealty to him and his claimed dominion over said moons. As in most city-states of the Tyr region, the templar’s of Draj are the city’s administrators and law enforcement.
Draj’s culture has been shaped by its King’s desire for conquest. The upper echelon of Draj’s populace is filled with warriors, who gained their status spilling blood for their king. They raid the near by villages, and the estates of foreign nobles, bringing back spoils, slaves and captives meant to be sacrificed to Tectuktitlay atop his towering pyramid.
Because of its fertile fields, and its position as the gateway to the mysterious cities of the north, Draj enjoys a brisk trade in many exotic goods of all descriptions. Many trading houses do business there. The City-State hosts the headquarters of House Tsalaxa and The Dedys Consortium.
