Why did a show spearheaded by animation legend Lauren Faust—the brilliant creative mind behind My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic—get canceled so abruptly? In todays deep dive, we are breaking down the complete history, timeline issues, and corporate drama behind the 2019 Cartoon Network reboot of DC Super Hero Girls! When Warner Bros. transitioned the massive 2015 Mattel fashion doll franchise into a creator-driven, 11-minute action-comedy in 2019, everything changed. Faust brought her signature kinetic, zany, 90s-style animation energy (reminiscent of classics like Animaniacs and Tiny Toons) to the DC Universe. She completely overhauled the character silhouettes, giving us a broad, muscular Supergirl and a tiny, compact Bumblebee. However, these highly expressive designs proved incredibly difficult for the new license holder, Hasbro, to translate into profitable fashion dolls, directly leading to a massive decline in merchandise sales. But it wasnt just the toy sales that caused a fracture in the fanbase—it was the bizarre changes to DC Comics lore! We analyze the incredibly warped continuity of Metropolis High, where iconic love interests like Lois Lane and Selina Kyle (Catwoman) were aged down into teenagers, while Superman (Clark Kent) and Batman (Bruce Wayne) remained fully established adult heroes. We discuss how the writers could have easily fixed this timeline by keeping Lois and Selina as adults and instead bringing in high school versions of Robin (Dick Grayson), Vixen, Volcana, or even bringing back Shayera Hol (Hawkgirl) to clash with the Invinci-Bros perpetually scowling Hawkman! We also look at hilarious show mainstays like Principal MacNair Chapin, who remained completely oblivious to his students secret identities right up until the very end—even while being a massive, irony-filled fanboy for Green Lantern! Ultimately, despite its brilliant character-driven comedy and sharp writing, the show alienated fans of the original 2015 run and became a quiet casualty of the massive 2022 Warner Bros.
