Review - This is a cool bullet hell game (Danmaku is the Japanese name for the Bullet Hell genre after all. I thought I could be cocky and play it on Normal difficulty (with max lives and continues) but the last level rinsed out my remaining lives. This run is on Easy mode, and it is easy in comparison, but only because I had a lot of lives. I wouldn’t be able to do it with default lives I don’t think.
The game does feel a bit samey throughout. If you shown me a clip, I would have no idea which of the 5 levels it was from. The bosses are very long, with many phases. I was shocked by how long the first boss took to beat. The mechanics are pretty straight forward, and it has a great auto smart bomb system that protects you when you get hit and acts basically as an extra life. There is a tougher mode that true masochists can try where the powering up system is different.
You can also unlock weapons by doing certain things in the game.
The game is beautiful with the attack patterns but you can’t really see much of what is going on as your eyes have to be fixed onto your ship, usually at the bottom of the screen. This is the only way to stay alive.
I couldn’t even look up long enough to see how many bombs I had left. I’m pretty sure it doesn’t tell you how many lives you have left though.
This is a good Danmaku game, but I didn’t see anything special compared to other games of this genre. It was enjoyable though.
