Here we see a remarkably dangerous cycle lane.
Firstly, it is placed in the Door Zone, where motorists may carelessly open a door without checking properly.
This can, and has killed cyclists, who have either split their head open in the corner of the door, or been thrown outward into traffic and run over by a passing vehicle.
Secondly, the cycle lane is only 1 metre wide... the DfT recommendation is 1.5m.
This is only slightly wider than the handlebars on the average mountain bike.
And thirdly, if a cyclist is in the middle of the cycle lane, trams pass roughly 1 metre away.
This is in direct conflict with Rule 163 of the highway code.
Having a 40ton tram pass 1 metre away is disconcerting to say the least!
