Scientists at the University of Plymouth and the British Antarctic Survey have investigated how a phenomenon they refer to as freshening – caused by a combination of melting glaciers, increased rain and extreme weather events – could affect marine species living in Antarctica.
Their new study assessed how the body fluids and internal organs of one species of amphipod responded to a simulated freshening experiment. And in this video John Spicer, our Professor of Marine Zoology, explains how it causes the amphipods to lose their salts, gain water and their gills are damaged.

![Paramedic Event: Exercise Dartmoor Clinical Champion Simulation
BSc (Hons) Paramedic Science students took part in an exercise organised by paramedic lecturers. The exercise took place on Dartmoor and enabled 3rd year students to develop their confidence in approaching a variety of simulated events that they might experience once they have graduated.
“The main objective of the event is for staff to pose difficult, but known, pre-hospital clinical situations and encourage teamwork, problem-solving and confidence from students as they work through these scenarios.” Sally Nitti lecturer and exercise leader.
