In Cyberpunk 2077 there are 12 vehicle brands available in Night City. You can obtain these vehicles through either buying, completing quests or simply stealing them. Brands range from Lower, Middle, to Upper tiers. There are also a handful of motorbikes on the game. The most iconic being the one, clearly inspired by Akira, the Yaiba Kusanagi. This video however, is a brief overview of the evolution and history of vehicles in the World of Cyberpunk.

You can’t talk about the Cyberpunk cars without understanding the basics of what fuel them all. CHOOH2 or just "chew two". After the fossil fuel crisis of the late 1980s, the rising need for an alternative fuel pushed a major breakthrough by soon to become megacorp Biotechnica. "chew two" is a synthetic, modified grain-based alcohol, made of a genetically created high-sugar wheat called Triticum Vulgaris Megasuavis. By the way, the real life regular wheat is called just Triticum Vulgaris. In 1990, Biotechnica was a relatively small corporation that couldn’t afford to farm its wheat in large quantities, so it licensed the right to its formula to several petrochemical companies like Petrochem and SovOil. "chew two" burns much cleaner than fossil fuels but the liquid itself is highly toxic. Similar to Methanol, it’s ingestion can cause poisoning, blindness and even death at higher doses.
By late 2020s the whole world already abandoned fossil fuels over the renewable "chew two". However, during the Fourth Corporate War, thanks to a bioengineered plague, the vast majority of the modified wheat crops were completely destroyed. This led to the worst global fuel crisis of history.

And you know what they say, whenever there is a crisis there is technological development. Tnx to the global shortage of fuel, some hybrid technologies developed a little. A major breakthrough in electrically powered ground vehicles occurred in Europe in the year 2041 with the development of the “induction wheels”. This tech amplified the charging rate of electric engines making them almost completely self-powering. However, this innovation wasn’t implemented broadly in America.

Auto manufacturers began to develop new models of aerodynes in response to decreasing “chew two” prices and also worsening street traffic. By 2077 AV technology is quite popular, although still restricted to the hands of the super rich. As a player you will have a few moments through the game where you will ride an AV, but you won’t be able to drive one by yourself.
AVs are used on a larger scale by police, military, paramedical, TV stations, and corporate forces. You will certainly see dozens of them flying around night City.
Transport of cargo also shifted to air bases somehow, both intra and inter cities. We can see a whole bunch of them on many of the trailers as well.
