Whenever I teach a technical topic, like synthesis or sound design, I always like to start by taking a deep dive into the history of the topic. 🤓
And, whenever I ask my students to share their biggest takeaway after learning about decades of innovation, developments in gear, and SO MUCH new technology and music… Do you know what keeps coming up?
Curiosity. ✨
The importance of curiosity.
The power of curiosity.
Throughout history, the pioneers in our field seldom (if ever) had ALL the answers. They were brilliant—absolutely—but they also asked a lot of questions, and explored ideas that probably felt slightly impossible at the time.
They were curious.
They replaced “this probably won’t work,” with “what IF this works?”
And “I doubt anyone will like this,” with “I wonder where this will lead me?”
And “That wasn’t supposed to happen!” with “Wow! How did *that* happen??”

For those of you who ever experience feelings of doubt or imposter syndrome with your creativity, one of the single most helpful things I can offer you is to get curious.
Over the years, curiosity has become my antidote for imposter syndrome.
When I don’t know all the answers (often!) or feel unsure about if/how something will work (also often!) I focus on asking curious questions, being playful, and opening myself up to the possibilities, beyond what I can even imagine.
Curiosity isn’t about perfection, or getting it “right”, or being the best.
It’s about wondering, exploring, playing, discovering, following, dreaming, creating, and trusting that clever little spark inside of you. ❤️
