When I first started exploring these areas together, I wanted to find a new, common vocabulary between my trumpet & synth, so would spend days and days working just on my trumpet, trying to find all the “synth-like” sounds possible—it’s amazing how different vowel shapes & air through tubes can sound like different colors of filtered noise, for example, or how singing and playing *almost* the same pitch at the same time can reveal a strange, audio-rate modulation type effect.
And on the other side, I am constantly exploring ways to add breath and organic motion into my synth patches, looking for ways to make my oscillators blend with and play off of my trumpet more, and so on.
And then, of course, how you actually connect the instrument together is a huge world unto itself. You can use the trumpet to trigger the synth, or the synth to process the trumpet, get the synth to analyze sound from the trumpet, or some combination of all of these things…… 👀
This patch uses the @makenoisemusic Morphagene to create a kind of "sonic glue" between the acoustic and electronic sound worlds; I recorded a bunch of trumpet sounds into the Morphagene, and with each new onset detected from the trumpet I am randomizing how the samples are played back.
This is all combined with some processing of the trumpet through delay lines of varying lengths, and some additional chaotic sound generation from within the synth itself to create a strange world of overlapping layers and textures. 🌀
