In August of 2024, His Grace, Bishop Alexei embarked on a Pilgrimage with His Beatitude, Metropolitan Tikhon to the Village of Unalaska for the celebration of the 200th Anniversary of the arrival of Saint Innokenty to Unalaska(August 1824). After the Divine services, during the wonderful Trapeza meal, His Grace, spoke to the faithful on the importance of the Native Culture and Traditions that has been given to them by the Grace of God, and that has been handed down to them throughout the many generations by their ancestors. Vladyka Alexei touches on how Saint Innokenty taught the Unangax Peoples of the village, and how he would instruct his priests to teach the Orthodox faith in the local languages. This is the Orthodox understanding of education that has been handed down since the time of the Apostles. The Orthodox philosophy of education is such that every Culture, every Tradition, every Language, and every human being is a sacred gift from God.

Those of you who do not know, Bishop Alexei's flock is scattered among the vast lands of the State of Alaska, and for anyone that has traveled in the state, especially to the villages, knows the cost of traveling is VERY expensive. To give you an idea of how much it costs to get out to the villages, it typically is more expensive for one to travel from Anchorage to the village of Kwethluk, which is roughly 390 miles(1 hour flight), than it is to fly from Anchorage to Chicago(4-5 hour flight), or Anchorage to Hawaii(5-6 hour flight). A round trip air fare ticket is over $1,000 for one person, a staggering price anyone, let alone a Bishop to minister to his flock with an episcopal visit.
