Humphrey Wittingtonsworth IV | Cubicle Labs Failed Projects: Magnetic Spinners @HumphreyWittingtonsworthIV | Uploaded May 2017 | Updated October 2024, 12 hours ago.
Magnetic bearings are totally a thing, and they work wonderfully in industry.
However, they're not easy to apply.
In theory, if bearing friction was removed, only air resistance remains.
If we recall basic college level physics, aerodynamic drag is the frontal area squared, form drag, and turbulence of the air behind it.
The actual numbers are super advanced graduate school level work with computational flow dynamics of air, so I don't have that info.
I tried making a few spinners with the basic aerodynamic principles such as the 8:1 aerofoil, teardrop shape, and small frontal area.
However, I couldn't get one to work.
I tried making one with bearings, and just using the magnet to support the weight, which means that ONLY friction and force perpendicular to the spindle would apply, but the TOLERANCES were off.
Basically, I need a better 3d printer, better bearings, and more, but I think I want to give it up for now, and focus on cube things.
