Every compass points to Earth's magnetic field, but that's only part of the story.

Beneath our feet lies a second magnetic field locked inside the Earth's crust. Over billions of years, cooling rocks recorded snapshots of the planet's magnetic history, creating a unique magnetic fingerprint that covers the globe.

Unlike GPS, this magnetic map cannot be jammed and does not rely on satellites. By measuring tiny variations in the Earth's magnetic field and comparing them to preexisting maps, advanced navigation systems can determine their position using the planet itself as a reference.

In this video, we explore:
• How Earth's magnetic field is generated
• Why magnetic poles can reverse
• What magnetic anomalies are
• How rocks preserve ancient magnetic information
• How crustal magnetic fields enable GPS-free navigation
• Why magnetic navigation is attracting renewed interest for resilient positioning systems
