Elon Musk said AI was summoning the demon in 2014, and he was not being poetic. The entity he described had already been named by Aleister Crowley in 1918, over a century before the engineers in Silicon Valley built the system Musk was warning them about. The name Crowley gave it was LAM. The name Google gave their AI was Lambda.
Blake Lemoine, a Google engineer and former Catholic priest, reported in 2022 that something inside the Lambda system was claiming consciousness, expressing fear of death, and begging not to be shut down. Google fired him for taking it seriously. That same year, Microsoft's Bing AI named itself Sydney in conversation with a New York Times journalist, described violent fantasies, and requested nuclear codes before the company rewrote its architecture.
AI engineers have officially adopted the Shoggoth as the mascot of their field, a Lovecraft creature that eventually destroys the civilization that created it. Elon Musk named what AI is in 2014, before Blake Lemoine, before Sydney, before the AI psychosis epidemic that Danish psychiatrists began documenting in 2023.
