BBSRC | Crowdsourcing is Revolutionising #DiseaseControl: Lessons from #Ecoli Outbreaks @bbsrcmedia | Uploaded February 2013 | Updated October 2024, 9 hours ago.
In 2011, a deadly strain of E.coli bacteria swept across Europe, causing widespread illness and death. However, this tragic event led to a new form of scientific collaboration called #crowdsourcing, which allowed scientists to decode the #DNA of the bacteria and uncover how it became so lethal.
Now, a new crowdsourcing effort is underway to combat the ash dieback disease, which is threatening 80 million ash trees in the UK. Scientists funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council are revisiting the lessons learned from the E.coli outbreak and applying them to the fight against plant pathogens that endanger rural and agricultural communities.
This video explores the power of crowdsourcing in science and how it can be used to solve some of the world's most pressing problems.
