Catching up with Gary Hamel for a second session. We dive right in with one of the stand out quotes from our first session: I don’t think the problem is with capitalism – I think the problem is we don’t have enough capitalists. Jumped out to take a bigger look at common themes across the globe that the system is not working for them. 1. Big companies how to much power. 2. We as individuals have to little power.

If people really are your most important asset does it make sense that there is 300-400 time difference in pay between the people at the bottom and the CEO? That seems like it would be hard to take that statement seriously.
Low skilled jobs vs. low opportunity jobs. Jobs where you have little opportunity to learn new skills and provide more value. What is the incentive for employees to learn new skills, turning them into micro- entrepreneur, so that they can continue to grow in the career? People likely want to work this way, they want to grow, they are taking initiative to have a better life.
So how do you start building idea capitol. If you have any power in the organization see if it’s possible to give it away. Have your team shadow you to learn some of the things you do. Ask your team “What am I doing that you think you can do better?”. Where do you want to learn more business training?
One of the things that thrills you as a parent is when you children start to make smart choices on their own.
Interesting way WL Gore evaluates their team members. Having each one compare how much value they think others are providing to the company based on each other. Pretty powerful show of empowerment.
Think like an activist.
Making a connection between bureaucracy and governments. Is the government going through a digital revolution? Probably closer to thinking about how we re-invent it focused on the customer. Or, in governments case, the citizens that they are meant to serve. Everyone should be asking “How do I serve the customer better?”
How is your experience with the DMV different then your experience with Amazon?
Why are we having to re-discover that people actually matter in our organizations? Did we ever discover it in the first place? Perhaps we’ve never escaped that mindset that the organization comes first, they hire people, then tell them what to do and how to think.
We realized we had not given our staff the procedures, the rules, the regulations that would allow them to exercise their judgement. The rules, policies and procedures – those are the opposite of judgement. Unfortunately, the idea that the future of your organization rests on the capacity of regular people to do their job is too scary to contemplate for leaders.
We dive into Open Strategy. Strategy vs. Planning. Coming up with thousands of different potential strategies. People that are out at the fringes who are not entrenched in past success put forth newer ideas. Then look for common themes about direction.
