In this video tutorial, I'll explain how I use free, open-souce 3D modelling software called OpenSCAD to design a custom mount for an electronic beam-break sensor. The design places the transmitter and receiver units facing each other, either side of a slot in a faceplate. When an object is inserted into the slot, the beam is obscured, which causes the output signal from the receiver to change from 0V to 5V.
The output can then be read on the GPIO pin of an Arduino or other microprocessor as an input in an escape room puzzle to detect whether a neurotoxin canister had been inserted, or a sword pulled from a stone... or many other uses!
