Covering concussions can be a tricky topic for sportswriters. On Thursday, May 21, 2020, we hosted a webinar to give sportswriters the tools to cover concussions accurately and with confidence.
We partnered with the Northwestern University Medill School of Journalism for a webinar to help sportswriters nail concussion coverage. CLF CEO Christopher Nowinski, Ph.D., interviewed a panel of Medill graduates with years of experience covering concussions, including J.A. Adande, Director of Sports Journalism at Medill, who helped launched the Media Project and teaches the Concussion Reporting Workshop in his classes at Medill, Matt Baker, Colleges and Recruiting Reporter for the Tampa Bay Times, Christine Brennan, Columnist for the USA TODAY, and Mark Lazerus, Senior Writer for The Athletic. They shared their experiences, best practices, and advice for covering this complicated topic. They also shared the benefits of taking CLF’s Concussion Reporting Certification and how the Concussion Reporting Workshop prepares sports journalism students to cover concussions in their career.
