What happens when rebellion becomes a collectible? I explore the auction of Kerouac’s On the Road scroll—and what it reveals about the collapse of counterculture, the rise of hyper-commodification, and the uncertain future of creative freedom in the age of AI.
Last week, I found myself reflecting on a strange and revealing moment: the auctioning of cultural artifacts from the 1950s and 60s counterculture at Christie’s—objects that once symbolized rebellion, artistic freedom, and spiritual exploration, now transformed into luxury commodities for the ultra-wealthy.
At the center of it all was Jack Kerouac’s original On the Road scroll—typed in a single, feverish burst of creative energy, stretching over 120 feet long. It’s a document that once embodied spontaneity, risk, and a kind of ecstatic refusal of conventional life. And yet, it just sold for over $12 million.
In this video essay, I explore what this transformation means.
I reflect on my personal connection to that era—through my mother, Joyce Johnson, who was part of the Beat scene and knew Kerouac during the years before his fame. I consider what “bohemian poverty” once represented: a conscious rejection of materialism, a belief that freedom and creativity mattered more than financial success.
That value system feels almost unimaginable today.
We now live in a world where everything—art, identity, rebellion itself—is rapidly absorbed, monetized, and resold. Subcultures no longer have time to develop organically before they are captured by algorithms and turned into content.
At the same time, power is consolidating in the hands of a small group of tech oligarchs, shaping not just markets, but culture, politics, and even our sense of self. As AI accelerates these transformations, we may be entering a new phase of disruption—one that challenges the very possibility of independent thought and creative freedom.
So the question becomes:
Can anything truly remain outside the system?
Can there still be a form of freedom that is unbranded, unsellable, and ungovernable?
Or are we already “off the road” entirely?
