Today on Little Wars TV we revisit the defining naval battle of the Spanish American War, Commodore Dewey's crushing victory at the Battle of Manila Bay on May 1, 1898. The historical battle appeared hopeless for the Spanish squadron...and the Spanish admiral in command knew it. We examine the strategy of Spanish Rear Admiral Patricio Montojo and set up TWO wargames in this episode. After refighting the historical battle, we set up the battle Admiral Montojo wanted to fight instead--the Battle of Subic Bay.
Why did the Spanish prefer to defend Subic Bay and could this position have given the Americans a tougher test? We'll wargame both battles using Brian Dewitt's "When Dreadnoughts Ruled the Seas" rules. Brian's latest supplement includes five naval battles for the Spanish American War and even offers paper ship models for gamers who don't have squadrons for this niche period. It's a great way to explore an underserved, under appreciated chapter of naval history.
