Cornell College has an innovative program where the students take one class at a time. This immersion into each subject is advantageous to learning CNC. Brian Johns, Assistant Professor of Engineering, can work with each student on an individual basis and answer all their questions.

Students in the mechanical engineering program speak about how having this type of knowledge is a lot more valuable than just being able to design the part. Understanding how products are created all the way through the design process plays a huge part in helping students in the field. Cornell College has a PCNC 440 and a 15L Slant-PRO lathe in their shop of which can cut all types of materials from plastics to titanium. The enclosures and durability of the machines gives Johns the peace of mind of letting the students run the machines on their own.

The technology offers a unique offering to students with little to no experience. If the students are to slip up and make a mistake, the fixes aren’t typically damaging to the machine. If they are, it is a cheap fix comparatively to larger machines. The machine has a compact footprint and can easily be moved around with a pallet jack by the mechanical engineering students.
