Back in the summer, I decided to try to get back into NieR Automata after not getting very far when I played a few years ago. I heard the Copied City music before I got there, but when I heard it in game I immediately started getting ideas for how I would go about arranging it. I told myself I would take a break from Automata for a bit to work on this cover and come back to it after I was done... That was in late August. Oops.
As with many of my more ambitious covers, this one pretty much arranged itself. Some of the more notable moments are the Polyphia inspired electronic section, and the Mick Gordon style breakdown. Iβm also super proud of the almost-original section near the end that slowly builds up over time. This one was a beast to mix, especially with how many vocal layers there ended up being. This is definitely the biggest Iβve managed to get a mix to sound so far.
Since we were both gonna be at MAGFest in January, we just had to set aside some time to film this one in person. I thought it would be super cool to do the entire thing in cosplay, meaning this video actually cost money to make lol. Well worth it though, I absolutely love how the video came out. Huge thanks to Kade Kalka for filming us.
Also thanks to Lizz Robinett for drawing the album art, and to Cait for doing the background! I normally wouldnβt even mention album art here since usually I just throw together some stock images in Photoshop and call it a day, but I knew this one had to be special. It turned out incredible! Lizz did an entire album of NieR covers a few years ago, so you should definitely check that out if you like NieR music!
