Today I’m making a hearty, homemade shepherd’s pie with ground beef, vegetables, creamy mashed potatoes, and plenty of cheddar cheese.
And yes, before anyone starts typing—we call it shepherd’s pie in America, I don’t care for lamb, and this is how my family enjoys it. Now that we have that settled, let’s make dinner! 😂
I needed to prepare shepherd’s pie for my dad, so I took the opportunity to make a large pan for dinner along with three individually portioned freezer meals. This is practical comfort-food cooking at its best: make one big batch, enjoy some now, and tuck the rest away for another day.
I am using ground beef from Butcher Box. I love their meat and selection. If you are interested in giving them a try, there is no subscription and no obligation. Right now they are running a promotion where you get free ground beef, chicken thighs or sirloin steak for a year if you continue getting boxes. Use this link to get started:

The individual pans are labeled with baking directions so they can go directly from the freezer or be thawed overnight before reheating. These would also be wonderful for sharing with an older parent, a new mother, a neighbor, or anyone who could use a homemade meal.
Basic Shepherd’s Pie Method
Prepare a savory ground-beef filling with vegetables, seasonings, and gravy. Spread the mixture evenly in your baking dishes, top generously with prepared mashed potatoes, and finish with shredded cheddar cheese.
Bake until the filling is hot and bubbly and the cheese is melted and golden.
Freezer Meal Baking Instructions
From frozen:
Remove the lid and bake at 400°F for approximately 25 to 30 minutes, or until heated through and bubbly.
Thawed overnight in the refrigerator:
Remove the lid and bake at 350°F for approximately 20 to 25 minutes, or until heated through and bubbly.
Ovens and container sizes vary, so always check that the center is thoroughly hot before serving.
This recipe is flexible, comforting, economical, and perfect for busy families. Serve it with a salad, green beans, buttered peas, bread, or simply enjoy it all by itself.
