Converse Rosenwald School is a 3-teacher style structure building located in Converse, Louisiana. The school was originally built between 1929-1930 before being encased in brick veneer in 1941 when it was relocated to its current location as part of the Converse Elementary School. This is one of 17 remaining Rosenwald schools still existing in Louisiana. NCPTT scanned this building using a Leica Geosystem Laser Scanner to produce this video flythrough of the buildings point cloud digital model.

Between 1912 and 1932, Booker T. Washington and Julius Rosenwald, the owner of the Sears Company and a well-known philanthropist, invested in constructing schools for the African American communities in the rural south of the United States. As part of that investment, the Tuskegee institute in Alabama develop design plans that would allow construction of the buildings to meet the standards of education while also allowing communities to modify the designs to accommodate the materials available in their areas. These buildings became known as the “Rosenwald Schools.” Over 5,000 schools were established in the south, with at least 395 schools known to be constructed in the state of Louisiana. After the Louisiana school system was established in the 1970’s, many of the Rosenwald School buildings have been destroyed, relocated, repurposed, or lost.

Louisiana Trust of Historic Preservation (LTHP) began the Rosenwald Initiative to locate all the still existing Rosenwald structures in the State of Louisiana. As part of the initiative, the LTHP contacted the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training (NCPTT) to assist with documenting the remaining buildings to help the communities preserve the remaining buildings and bring awareness to the project.
