The capacity of the human species to pool our insight with others and pass this collective understanding down the generations means that we are a radically different creature to what we were a thousand years ago. However, the rate of societal and technological change is today so great that we are radically different to what we were only one lifetime ago. This excess of novelty means we are forced into a hyper-conscious mode just in order to navigate the world.
