Dr Barry Strauss, in conversation with our students, passed on a lesson he once received from his own teacher: a good book is one that resists us at first. Rather than being discouraged by difficulty, students were encouraged to trust those who have found value in these works before them, and to sit in the aporia, knowing that hard books are often the ones most worth our time.
