South Korea's consumer prices rose 3-point-1 percent year-on-year in August, returning to the 3 percent range after briefly dipping below it the month before.

According to the Ministry of Data and Statistics on Wednesday, last month's reading was up from 2-point-8-percent in July, driven largely by a jump in mobile phone bills due to the base effect from phone subscription discounts last year.
An official from the ministry said excluding that one-time effect, inflation would have been closer to 2-point-5-percent.
Petroleum prices rose 14-point-2-percent from the year before, down from July, while farm and fishery prices fell 2-point-6-percent on higher supply and government discounts.
Core inflation, which excludes food and energy, climbed to 3-point-4-percent, the highest reading in 3 years and 3 months.
