This text is Lenin's notes and commentary on Hegel's 'Lectures on the history of philosophy'. In other words, it is Lenin commenting on how Hegel is describing the teachings of other philosophers throughout history. It is from Lenin's Philosophical Notebooks. These words of Lenin are only rough notes, but they give interesting insights into Lenin's thinking. His comments reveal a deep understanding of philosophy and dialectical materialism, which provides us with valuable clues for evaluating different philosophical schools of thought.

Lenin points our attention to some of the most important parts of Hegel's text. He particularly notices the dialectical elements in various philosophers, even when not fully developed or clear. Lenin puts special emphasis on materialism and defends it from Hegel's idealistic distortions.

For example: He points out that Hegel tries to erase the materialism of Democritus from history, that Hegel tries to minimize Aristotle's criticism of Plato's idealism, and that Hegel even refuses to use the word 'materialist'. Instead Hegel calls it 'atomism' in the case if Leucippus and 'realism' in the case of Aristotle.

Still, Hegel's presentation of the history of philosophy was highly significant. It was an early attempt to demonstrate how philosophy developed dialectically, and was a far superior presentation to his predecessors. Because of Lenin's valuable comments, we can derive more from Hegel's book.
