Chronic absenteeism among Connecticut students fell for the fourth consecutive year as the state continues efforts to bring school attendance closer to pre-pandemic levels.
Connecticut education leaders say roughly 16.4% of students were chronically absent last school year, a one-point improvement. Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing at least 10% of school days.
The state is also working to reconnect teenagers and young adults who have lost touch with school or work. Advocates say improving attendance is only one step and point to challenges including stable housing, mental health, poverty and special education.
Lawmakers from both parties say they want to continue partnerships among schools, state agencies and nonprofits while supporting workforce programs. Cities and towns are also calling for more funding, as a new commission on education funding prepares recommendations ahead of the next legislative session.
