A serious nine-car crash on I-291 in South Windsor that sent multiple people to the hospital is renewing concerns about speeding near Connecticut work zones.

A preliminary police report lists speed as a factor in the crash. The Connecticut Department of Transportation says more than one-third of vehicles traveling through active work zones are exceeding the speed limit, while 5% are traveling more than 10 mph over the limit. The highest speed recorded by the state's work zone speed camera program so far is 119 mph.

CT DOT says it has also added signage, speed indicators and markings in the area. The South Windsor Fire Department reports five crashes in the area this summer. State police are asking anyone who witnessed the latest crash to come forward.
