Meta has reached a landmark settlement with 47 states, including Connecticut, agreeing to pay as much as $18 billion over lawsuits accusing the company of profiting from social media addiction.
The parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp also agreed to new controls aimed at protecting minors, including restrictions for children under 13, overnight app limits for users under 18, parental controls over algorithms, content ratings and a two-hour daily time limit. Connecticut Attorney General William Tong says the state’s share could be between $190 million and $265 million, with the money going toward programming related to children’s mental health.
