Wolfram tools are largely unknown in ecology. In this talk I outline some of the features of the Wolfram ecosystem that make it a fantastic tool for doing ecology (with examples), but also some of the challenges that—in my view as a practising ecologist—hamper more widespread adoption. I make three specific and interlinked recommendations: 1) curation of data access, rather than data; 2) incentives and support for community contributions and collaborations; and 3) identification of “killer apps.” I illustrate these using the example of maximum entropy (""MaxEnt"") models for estimating species range distributions.
