From the title cards: In 1979 during the Global Weather Experiment, 313 constant level balloons were launched into the tropical stratosphere to collect in situ wind and temperature measurements. The data from these flights were used to produce this computer-generated film. Each balloon is displayed with an 18-hr trajectory, the color of which defines the ambient air temperature. A scale at the bottom of the frame shows the color-to-temperature conversion.
