Melmetal got suspect tested in Gen 8 OU almost three years ago, less than a month before Gen 9 dropped. But here’s the weird part — barely anyone wanted it banned. Only 14% of voters actually said “ban,” making it the lowest ban rate in Smogon history. That’s even lower than some of the strangest suspect tests from the Gen 5 OU era, like Dragonite.
Usually, suspect tests split the community — some players think a Pokémon’s broken, others think it’s fine. But with Melmetal? The vote was overwhelmingly “nah, it’s fine.” So how did a Pokémon almost nobody wanted banned end up in a suspect test… and why didn’t it actually get banned?
