Watch as the Unplugged Performance team conducts a performance comparison test on the new 2024 Tesla Model 3 Performance at Buttonwillow Raceway!
UP development driver Craig Coker and our very own Marketing Director Brendan who happens to also be a track enthusiast, share their experiences to the effects of a different wheel and tire setup on a Tesla Model 3 Performance.
We first test what a stock wheel setup (Stock M3P wheels with Pirelli P Zero tires) with UP modified suspension can do and captured times.
Stock Wheel Set Up:
Tesla Warp Wheel and Pirelli P Zero 4
- Front: 20x9” wheel and 235/35 R20 tire
- Rear: 20x10” wheel and 275/30 R20 tire
- Wheel Weight (Without Aero Covers): Front ~22.7 lbs / Rear ~23.4 lbs
On our second run, we went wider and changed to Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires. These tires were wrapped on Unplugged Performance’s 20 inch UP-03 wheels which are a lighter and stronger forged wheel.
UP Wheel Set Up:
UP-03 Forged Wheel and Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S
- Front: 20x9.5” wheel and 265/30 R20 tire
- Rear: 20x10.5” wheel and 285/30 R20 tire
- Wheel Weight: Front ~21.5 lbs / Rear ~22.0 lbs
After installing the tires and UP-03 wheels, the car showed dramatic improvements in handling and grip. The upgraded setup provided a more planted rear end, better braking performance, and most importantly enhanced driver confidence.
Even though we recorded lap times, it was obvious times were going to improve, the goal was to conduct a subjective test and get feedback from different drivers with differing styles and skillsets.
