Modern energy systems including Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and Inverter-Based Resources (IBRs) have complex data pathways to diverse entities—asset owners, operators, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), Independent System Operators (ISOs), scheduling entities, utilities, market participants, and contractors (e.g., network/security operators). Each entity’s pursuit of independent standards results in fragmented systems, with multiple automation controls, servers, firewalls, routers, and Internet connections per facility, complicating integration, scalability, and threat management and compliance.

In this session Sara presents an integrated design approach that considers the needs of all involved entities. It aims to minimize infrastructure and attack surfaces, reducing the need for redundant equipment, space, and costs. No need to reinvent the wheel. Leverage trusted solutions such as Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), TLS, and MQTT to authenticate and transfer data securely. And more.
