On your driving test, you'll have to perform one reversing manoeuvre and maybe the emergency stop as well. Roughly 1 in 3 driving tests include the emergency stop. Knowing how to do an emergency stop properly is essential and not just for the driving test.
Just like in a real-life situation, you'll be expected to brake and stop the car promptly but in full control. Since July 2004, cars sold in the EU have ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) fitted as standard. This makes stopping in an emergency a lot easier as it prevents the wheels from locking and skidding. Ask your instructor if the car you're driving has ABS. If it does then you'll need to press the footbrake quickly and firmly.
