A playthrough of Sega's 1995 beat 'em up for the Sega Genesis, Comix Zone.
This video shows two runs through the game. The first shows the good ending. The second, beginning at 30:41, shows the alternate routes through the stages and the bad ending.
Comic book artist Sketch Turner is working late one night when a storm blows up. With a flash of lightning, he finds himself being pulled into the pages of his latest story. The villain, Mortus, wants to take control and is now penning in an army of mutants to rid the "comix zone" of its creator. Left with no choice, Sketch assumes the role of the hero and sets out to put the kibosh on Mortus's ambitions.
There are six stages, each occupying a single page carved into panels, and every panel has a battle or a simple environmental puzzle to deal with. Many panels have multiple exits that lead to different paths through the page.
The controls are smooth and easy to handle, relying on a combination of simple button combos and command inputs to pull off a wide array of moves, and the game puts up a solid challenge without veering into frustration country. It's a bit on the short side, but the game is fast and fun while it lasts.
The graphics are hyper stylish and perfectly capture the comic feel, and though they sometimes feel a bit unfinished (there are obvious glitches in many of the panel transitions, and the sprites bug out and flicker horribly when the screen gets too busy), Comix Zone is one of the best looking titles on the Genesis. The soundtrack, despite using the GEMS driver, is also excellent in how well it nails the 90s alt rock sound.
Comix Zone is a good time. If you enjoy 16-bit console beat 'em ups, you'd do well to not overlook this cult classic.
