A playthrough of Tradewest's 1991 action game for the Nintendo Game Boy, Battletoads.

Battletoads for the Game Boy isn't a mere port of the NES game (youtu.be/HjatUdFaAf8) that was released five months earlier. It follows a similar blueprint, but the story, locations, and stages are all new.

While enjoying an evening out at a "deep-space leisure station", the 'Toads find themselves lured in by the charms of a "Thalian Thorax Dancer." However, their hormone-driven revelry comes to an abrupt end when the dancer reveals herself to be none other but the dark queen in disguise! She kidnaps Rash and Pimple and ships them off to the planet of Armagedda.

Zitz now sets out for Armagedda, where he'll have to take down Robo-Manus in order to free his brothers.

Battletoads was an impressive effort for a game released so early in the Game Boy's life. The graphics and sound were some of the best yet on the system, and few handheld games at the time could match the variety of its gameplay. Even better was that, though it mirrored its NES counterpart in several ways, it provided a fresh experience for everyone who wanted more after playing the original.

A ton of material has been compacted into Battletoads' brisk twenty-minute run time. Each stage brings its own distinct style of gameplay, and they've all been adapted well to the small screen. Everything has been scaled down, but it looks clean, there's no screen crunch, and the LCD blur doesn't interfere with playability. The controls are looser, the gameplay is slower, and the difficulty level has been lowered a couple notches, but it does an excellent job of retaining the Battletoads feel without feeling cheap and cut down.

It's a great Battletoads game, and it has one of the best soundtracks in a series known for excellent music. If you liked the NES cart, you won't want to miss out on this Game Boy-exclusive sequel.
