$D23 2026: VisionQuest Unveils Vision’s Fractured Mind California, Anaheim, Honda Center, August 14, 2026 Marvel Television made VisionQuest one of D23 2026’s major reveals, unveiling its first public trailer and reuniting Paul Bettany’s Vision with James Spader’s Ultron. The eight-episode series premieres exclusively on Disney+ on October 14, 2026. During Disney’s showcase at the Honda Center, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige welcomed Paul Bettany and James Spader to present the trailer and official poster. More than eleven years after Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ultron returns to the MCU as Vision continues the unresolved journey of White Vision, last seen leaving Westview in the WandaVision finale. Although Vision possesses the memories unlocked by his former self, those memories have not restored his original personality or emotions. He remembers being an Avenger, a partner and a father, but questions whether those identities truly belong to him. VisionQuest therefore presents resurrection as the beginning of an existential crisis rather than its solution. The series depicts Vision’s consciousness as an immense mansion inhabited by human manifestations of artificial intelligences connected to his creation. Paul Bettany explained that Vision saved and preserved these programs within himself, turning the mansion into both a memory palace and a digital archive. Its residents include James D’Arcy as J.A.R.V.I.S., Orla Brady as F.R.I.D.A.Y., Emily Hampshire as E.D.I.T.H., Henry Lewis as D.U.M.-E and Jonathan Sayer as U. T’Nia Miller plays Jocasta. Together, they represent the technological legacy that led from Tony Stark’s assistants and Ultron to Vision. James D’Arcy’s casting creates a clever MCU connection. He previously portrayed Edwin Jarvis, the human inspiration for J.A.R.V.I.S., in Agent Carter and Avengers: Endgame. He now gives a human face to the AI originally voiced by Paul Bettany before Bettany became Vision. James Spader appears as both a human manifestation of Ultron and the villain’s familiar mechanical form. Marvel has not confirmed whether Ultron survives only inside Vision, exists as a backup or can operate in the physical world. Ultron is not simply a returning enemy but one of Vision’s creators. The series explores what Paul Bettany jokingly called “robot daddy issues,” examining abusive fathers, resistant sons and inherited trauma. Vision may need Ultron’s knowledge while keeping him contained behind a powerful firewall. Ruaridh Mollica plays Thomas Shepherd, a character connected to Tommy Maximoff and the speedster Speed. His presence turns Vision’s identity crisis into a family drama. While confronting the father who helped create him, Vision must decide whether he can become a father to a son who has returned in another form. Marvel Television executive Brad Winderbaum described VisionQuest as a story spanning three generations—grandfather, father and son—and asking whether someone raised by an abusive father can become a good parent. The series follows Agatha All Along, in which Billy Maximoff began searching for Tommy. However, Marvel has not confirmed appearances by Joe Locke or Elizabeth Olsen, meaning the returns of Billy and Wanda Maximoff remain uncertain. Disney officially presents VisionQuest as the final chapter of the television trilogy that began with WandaVision in 2021 and continued with Agatha All Along in 2024. It retains their themes of grief, identity and constructed realities while translating them into science fiction, artificial intelligence and the architecture of Vision’s fragmented mind. Showrunner Terry Matalas, known for Star Trek: Picard Season 3, redeveloped the project following its earlier incarnation under Jac Schaeffer. Brad Winderbaum described it as a love letter to Schaeffer’s work while remaining distinctly Matalas’s series. The directors are Christopher J. Byrne, Gandja Monteiro, Vincenzo Natali and Terry Matalas. The wider cast includes Todd Stashwick as Paladin and Faran Tahir returning as Raza, whom he first played in 2008’s Iron Man. A fiery figure seen in promotional imagery inspired theories about Jim Hammond, Marvel’s original Human Torch. However, Marvel has not identified the character, so this remains fan speculation. Synopsis: Vision attempts to recover his identity, emotions and humanity while confronting the artificial intelligences, memories and family relationships contained within his fractured mind.
