This week it was announced that Yoo Hee-nam, an 87-year-old sex slave survivor will lead her peers in a suit against Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Emperor Akihito, Japanese media who called them “prostitutes,” and Japanese companies accused of war crimes. In addition, they reportedly will seek US$20 million in damages.
Why are they suing Japan? Asia Now takes a look at their case and invites Jonathan Miller, Fellow on East Asia with the EastWest Institute to provide a greater perspective.
The House of Sharing responded to my inquiry after taping of this podcast. They noted that Mr. Ahn couldn’t respond to my questions because of the death of one of the comfort women, this is despite having received the questions days before.
