15,000 — That’s the number of people that have been arrested on suspicion of committing cybercrime in China.
Police have been investigating some 7,400 cases of digital crimes as part of a six-month operation that included hacking, online fraud and illegal sale of personal information.
In fact, one person has reportedly been detained for exaggerating the death toll from the Tianjin explosions and another for claiming her father died there.
Given the extent that China commits cybercrimes abroad, the crackdown has more to do with Beijing wishing to control the virtual environment rather than policing illicit activity.
