This monumental bronze figure, originally intended to depict Nero himself, was later rededicated as a symbol of the sun god Sol.
After Nero's death, subsequent emperors made alterations to the statue to sever its connection to his tyrannical rule. Emperor Hadrian even had the statue relocated to make room for the Temple of Venus and Roma.
