At least 20 Colorado businesses plan to close on Friday as part of a nationwide general strike in solidarity with the anti-ICE protests in Minneapolis. The strike calls for no work, no school and no spending.
“I’m a small business. Me shutting down for a day … that’s not easy for me to do. But doing the right thing isn’t always easy,” said Carson Allen, co-owner of @goodbonesdenver coffee shop on Colfax, one of the businesses participating in the strike.
A coalition of Colorado activist groups, including @gsus_colorado and @cusp.denver, have helped organize the strike in Colorado and are holding a rally on Friday at 2 p.m. at La Alma-Lincoln Park to gather donations for mutual aid groups and build community among attendees.
“It’s really about showing our power and making connections so that when those really serious moments happen, we feel safe with each other because we need each other. It’s important that we’re preparing and that we’re organizing,” said Evan Liu, a Denver-based activist with both General Strike U.S. - Colorado and Community United in Solidarity with Palestine.
Other businesses who have pledged to close are Vietnamese restaurant @sapsuarestaurant, flower shop @rowdypoppy, rock climbing gym @ascentstudio in Fort Collins, @banhbutterbakerycafe in Aurora and @tridentboulder.
