The song is a tribute to Martyrs' Day, on the day of 9th of January. On that date, student-led anti-American riots broke out on the US occupied canal zone, in order to force the US out of the Panama Canal. The US army was sent in to suppress the riot, and after 3 days of fighting, 22 Panamanians and 4 US soldiers died. The 2 nations would eventually sign a treaty regarding the canal, in 1977, signed by US President Jimmy Carter & Panamanian military leader Omar Torrijos (who was mentioned in the song).
The song was written in 1977 to commemorate the signing of the treaty, but in 1989, the US invaded Panama in order to hunt down the Panamanian military dictator, Manuel Noriega. Noriega use to be an ally to the US, but his dealings with drug cartels, and eventual leanings towards the USSR, made President George H W Bush to launch a military intervention against him. After a year of fighting, Noriega surrendered and deposed. In 1999, The US finally withdrew from the Panama Canal, but animosity towards the US over it's numerous invasions of the country and turning the Canal Zone into a semi- colony, still exists throughout Panama. And Latin America will never forget the exploitation the western powers did to them in the past.....
