A talk given by Professor Hamid Assadi of Brunel University, in the seminar series organised by Prakash Srirangam of Warwick University.

Abstract:

Cold spraying is a solid-state powder deposition process with several unique characteristics for coating, repair, and additive manufacturing. After a few decades since its invention, it continues to receive a growing attention from both industry and academia. This presentation will provide an overview of the cold spray research, focusing on the relevant experiments, the application of numerical modelling, and the current understanding of the deposition mechanisms. It will also include a brief history of cold spray, in addition to a few personal anecdotes relating to the speaker’s exposure to cold spray research, through 25 years of collaboration with the University of Federal Armed Forces, Hamburg, Germany. The presentation will cover a selection of topics, ranging from numerical modelling of particle impact to the prediction of the mechanical properties of the cold spray deposits from primary process parameters.

Hamid Assadi is Professor of Solidification Research at BCAST, Brunel University London. He received his PhD in Materials Science and Metallurgy from the University of Cambridge in 1996 and was awarded a Research Fellowship from the Alexander-von-Humboldt Foundation in 2004. His work experience includes a professorship at Tarbiat Modares University, and several visiting appointments at Helmut Schmidt University, RWTH Aachen, Max Planck Institute for Iron Research, and the German Aerospace Centre. Hamid has over thirty years of experience in multiphysics modelling of dynamic systems, ranging from materials processing to vehicular traffic, using various techniques such as the cellular automata, the phase-field method, and the mean-field theory. He is interested in understanding the underlying mechanisms of dynamic materials phenomena, such as disorder and solute trapping during rapid solidification of alloys and intermetallics, besides physics-informed machine learning and software development.
