Cold Fear is a survival horror game released in 2005 by Darkworks and published by Ubisoft, and it’s one of those games that quietly disappeared despite having some genuinely interesting ideas. In this review, I’m taking a fresh look at Cold Fear on GOG, playing the modern PC version and seeing how it holds up today.

Set on a storm-tossed Russian whaling ship in the Bering Sea, Cold Fear puts you in the role of a U.S. Coast Guard officer investigating a distress call that quickly turns into a nightmare. The game blends old-school survival horror with action elements, featuring fixed camera angles, over-the-shoulder aiming, limited resources, and enemies that refuse to stay dead. One of its most unique features is the constantly moving ship, where waves, wind, and environmental hazards actively affect gameplay.

In this video, I talk about the atmosphere, combat, controls, story, and overall experience, with a focus on how the GOG version performs on modern systems. I also compare Cold Fear to other survival horror games from the era, including Resident Evil, and explain why this game earned a small cult following over the years.
