Coffee professionals spend years talking about flavour.
Blueberry. Jasmine. Caramel. Stone fruit.
Yet one of the biggest challenges in specialty coffee isn't tasting those flavours—it's agreeing on what they actually mean. Shop: https://alternativebrewing.com.au/products/scentible-sensory-kit
That's because sensory evaluation isn't about having a naturally gifted palate. It's about building shared references that allow baristas, roasters, coffee buyers and educators to describe the same experience using the same language.
That's exactly what intrigued me about the Scentible Sensory Kit.
Rather than treating it as another aroma kit, I wanted to evaluate it as a genuine sensory training system. Could it improve flavour recognition? Does it offer something different from traditional sensory kits? And does it actually make you a better coffee taster—or simply a better guesser?
This is an independent review where I put the kit through practical exercises, side-by-side coffee comparisons and blind triangulation testing to see how it performs in a real coffee workflow.
One of the biggest misconceptions in coffee is that great tasters are born with exceptional palates. In reality, sensory evaluation is a skill developed through repetition, curiosity and deliberate practice. Every experienced coffee professional has spent years building mental references for aromas, flavours, acids and defects that help explain what's happening in the cup.
The challenge is that those references aren't universal.
My understanding of blueberry may not be the same as yours. My idea of jasmine could be completely different. Without shared sensory references, we're all describing coffee through our own experiences.
That's where Scentible becomes genuinely interesting.

00:00 Why Coffee Tasting Is Difficult
01:15 The Problem With Flavour Notes
02:20 Side-by-Side Coffee Experiment
05:00 What is Scentible Sensory Kit?
08:30 Blind Triangulation Challenge
12:48 Defects, Acids & Modifiers
14:58 How to Train Your Palate
17:50 Final Verdict
Instead of focusing on memorising aromas, it encourages recognition. Learning how sweetness, acidity, body and aroma interact rather than simply identifying a flavour note.
Throughout this review I compare untreated coffee with aroma-enhanced cups, explore structured sensory exercises, and test whether stronger references genuinely change the way we perceive coffee.
What surprised me wasn't whether I could identify every aroma correctly.
It was how differently I paid attention.
Rather than asking, "What flavour is this?" I found myself asking, "What changed?" Did the sweetness become more obvious? Did the acidity feel brighter? Did another characteristic suddenly stand out?
That shift in thinking is where I believe real sensory development begins.
I also explore why Scentible's acids, modifiers and defects may be its strongest feature. Modern specialty coffee isn't just about recognising fruit and chocolate anymore. Processing methods, fermentation, roasting development and green coffee quality all influence what we taste, and understanding those characteristics is just as important as identifying positive flavour notes.
Like any sensory training tool, this isn't a shortcut. It won't replace tasting real food, cupping coffee or building experience over time.
What it does provide is something incredibly valuable: a structured, repeatable way to deliberately train your sensory perception instead of simply hoping it improves.
Because the biggest improvement in coffee tasting doesn't come from guessing more flavour notes.
It comes from learning to notice more.
