South Dakota isn’t going “beyond coal.” Quite the opposite. Coal provided essential generation during the coldest days of Winter Storm Fern. And now, Basin Electric Power Cooperative, which serves 3 million customers over a 9-state area, is thinking about building a new coal-fired plant near Gillette, Wyoming.
